Clayton L. Hummel

Clayton L. Hummel, 78, of Bryant passed away on Monday, August 1, 2016 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born on June 5, 1938 in Banat, Michigan to John and Eva (Stogan) Hummel. He was married on August 4, 1958 to Betty McCoy.

He was a 1956 Stephenson High School graduate and a US Army veteran serving with the 101st Airborne. He worked at Automatic Sprinkler in Monroe for over 30 years and retired from the Jay County Highway Dept. in 2000. He was a member of Bryant Lions Club, Bryant Volunteer Fire Department, Bryant Town Council, Tri State Gas Engine and Tractor, and Wheels of Yesteryear Antique Club.

He is survived by two sons, Jeff (Dawn) Hummel of Monroe; and Randy Hummel of Bryant; eight brothers, Arnold Hummel; and Rich Hummel, both of Stephenson, Michigan; Martin Hummel of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin; John Hummel; and Charles Hummel, both of Monominee, Michigan; Joseph Hummel of Chicago, Illinois; Robert Hummel of Horlosville, Wisconsin; and Allen Hummel of Daggett, Michigan; two sisters, Barbara Hanson of Daggett, Michigan; and Ruth Engle of Green Bay, Wisconsin; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on July 26, 2015; three sisters; and a brother.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 5 at Baird-Freeman Funeral Home in Portland. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 6 at the funeral home. Officiating will be Pastor Paul Van Cise and Pastor Robert Schroeder. Burial will be at Gravel Hill Cemetery in Portland.

Military rites will be provided by American Legion Post #211.

Memorials may be made to the Jay County Heart Fund of Diabetes Foundation.
