Joseph Furtner
Joseph Furtner, 98, long time Berne resident, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016 surrounded by his family at his home after a long illness and under the compassionate care of Family Hospice. He was born on September 16, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois to Joseph and Maude Furtner. He was married on July 10, 1948 to Trilby Lou Walker.
His family moved to Linden, New Jersey, where he lived until he joined the Marines during WWII. He served bravely on Guadalcanal. He moved to Hollywood, California, where he met the love of his life, Trilby. He was called once again to serve his country in the Korean Conflict. After his service, they began their family in southern California. They moved to Berne in 1973 after he took a job in management with Micro Precision, where he worked until retirement. Reading was a passion for him, and he was honored to serve on the Berne Library Board. He valued family and was a loyal friend to many. His life was full of love and grand adventures. He will be sorely missed.
He is survived by his wife; three children, Paul, Lori, and Janice; three grandchildren, David, Michael, and Kyra; and one great-grandchild, Penelope.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Violette May Palmer-Esty.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
