Laverne D. Gilliom
Laverne D. “Bowtie” Gilliom, 91, of Berne passed away on Friday, December 16, 2016 at Swiss Village in Berne, where he was a resident. He was born on April 20, 1925 in Adams County to Clifton C. and Viola L. (Sprunger) Gilliom. He was married on January 25, 1948 to Anna Jane Schwartz.
He was a member and taught Sunday school at First Mennonite Church in Berne. He drove for Belmont Trucking, was the bookkeeper and in sales for Balsiger Motors for over 15 years, manager of Berne Lumber for 17 years, purchasing agent for Dunbar Furniture, and in retirement drove over 200,000 miles delivering motor homes for Don Ray of Decatur. He enjoyed traveling, making latch hooked rugs, fishing, and cracking hickory nuts.
He is survied by three daughters, Judy (Dan) Rosenberger of Sheridan; Carol Gilliom of Ronald, Washington; and Betty Mosure of Berne; two sons Tom (Martha) Gilliom of West Lafayette; and Richard (Mary) Gilliom of Goshen; two sisters, Elaine (Luster) Rich of Berne; and Ruth Bauman of Clinton, North Carolina; brother, Roy (Mary) Gilliom of Fort Wayne; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife in 2013.
Visitaiton will be one and a half hours prior to the 2:00 p.m. funeral service on Wednesday, December 21 at the First Mennonite Church chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Jerry A. Flueckiger. Private family graveside services will be at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the First Mennonite Church missions or Swiss Village Samaritan Fund.
