Virginia R. Mattax

Virginia R. Mattax, 92 of Berne passed away on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017 at Swiss Village in Berne, where she was a resident. She was born on August 2, 1924 to Elmer and Ida (Kauffman) Flueckiger. She was married on March 12, 1944 to Laurel Mattax.

They lived on the Mattax Homestead all of their married life. Following her husband’s death in 2002, she stayed on the farm until she moved to Swiss Village in 2013. She was a helper to him on the farm and loved to garden. She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing for her family and church friends, quilting, and reading. She played the piano and organ for many years at the Springhill Church, where she also taught Sunday school.

She is survived by four daughters, Rita (John) Carroll of Decatur; and Saundra (Keith) Minger; Linda (Keith) Keller; and Susan (Tony) Braun, all of Berne; two brothers, Howard (Eleanor) Flueckiger; and William Flueckiger, both of Berne; sister, Shirley (Bill) Emshwiller of Cottonwood, Arizona; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brother, Valier Flueckiger; and great-granddaughter, Claire Fordham.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19 and one hour prior to the 10:00 a.m. funeral service on Thursday, April 20 at the Swiss Village Auditorium in Berne. Officiating will be Pastor William Hull and Pastor Joe Nass. Burial will be at Springhill Cemetery in rural Berne.

Memorials may be made to Springhill Church or March of Dimes (in remembrance of great-granddaughter, Claire Fordham).
